Meeting with Mr Peter Tinley, Representative of Willagee Area

On 24 September 2010, two members of MAG met with Peter Tinley, a representative of the Willagee area to discuss the Canning Bridge Precinct proposals. One of his main concerns was the apparent lack of a thorough investigation into the traffic problems which may result from the proposals. These may impact on his electorate as many people from the area travel over Canning Bridge to gain access to Perth or eastern suburbs. The traffic is already beyond the capacity of the road and bridge so further development needs assessment after traffic investigation, not before.

Mr Tinley was also concerned about the feeling in the community that too little consultation had been carried out with the residents around the Canning Bridge Precinct. With the current emphasis on “transparency” in government at all levels, this perceived lack is deplored.

He expressed a similar concern about the enlargement of the study area from the original 800 metres radius from the rail station to the present range of over 1250 metres – also without any consultation with those people most effected; the current residents.

Mr Tinley undertook to speak with relevant councillors (including the Mayor) and ask for clarification about these concerns.

Canning Bridge Precinct – View Slide Show

Community Meeting 31 August 2010

The amenity for the community will be significantly impacted

Anyone that lives or works in the area will have their amenity impacted.
Issues include:
  • More traffic
  • More congestion
  • Parking issues
  • Reduced street parking
  • Overshadowing by neighbouring buildings
  • Less trees
  • More noise, More pollution
  • Extensive zone of high-rise buildings
  • Existing views impacted
  • Reduced privacy and overlooking issues
  • Lack of public open space at ground level
  • Security concerns
The community has not been clearly informed about the creep that has occurred for the area proposed for rezoning.
The zoning changes proposed are too substantial (some areas are proposed to have 2.5x or 3x the existing building height limits!) and the area proposed for rezoning has been significantly increased.
